The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

An awesome one.

this kid is 5 years old - my life is a failure.
He’s got serious chops. Get the kid a novelty beard and System of a Down will be obligated to hire him.

When people champion transformations in urban areas, they often words like “renewal” and “revitalization,” as rundown buildings get gutted, repainted, and reincarnated as sparkly lofts. But what’s sometimes ignored is the forced removal of the people who inhabit those rundown (and often historic) spaces. Two years ago, the photographer David Sotelo ventured into downtown Los Angeles’s former El Dorado Hotel, which had been home to a great many people and families, but was vacated when the building changed ownership. Sotelo managed—through a combination of luck and urban spelunking—to make many trips to the hotel during the time between the old residents’ forced exodus and the building’s renovation. Now a set of high-end lofts, the El Dorado that appears in Sotelo’s work evokes haunting feelings, as the vacant rooms are littered with things that residents left behind and covered with the imprints of human lives.

Ack!! Tricia, I have new-found respect for you, my friend.
PS. Don’t ever make me do that. ;)
“throw the insect in my mouth!” I ate a Chinche - a live insect with its freaking legs on the its body!
I left my high heels and mascara behind as I headed into a Oaxacan village in Mexico for fieldwork with my friends/research colleague, Tanya Menendez. (You can read about why I went here.) Little did I know that I would return as an insect eater!
Before I organize the thousands of photos that I took and pages of fieldnotes - I would like to share my most important accomplishment - I ATE A LIVE INSECT!
Read rest of post on Tricia’s Blog… with more adventurous videos. :)

About ten years ago, I was made into a comic book superhero character courtesy of my friend Adam Wallenta. Steve was also working on this project. I like my super-powers… and that we kept the South Bronx in there. :) I also remember this story so well and hope that it gets revived. It was a good one. (You hear me, Adam/Steve?).
So this happened around 2000 or so.
Global Change through Xchange
For the next few months I will be working with the British Council in helping to develop the Multilateral Community Xchange (MCX) pilot program, a component of the successful internationally recognized Global Xchange program which was primarily developed by the BC and VSO. The program will connect youth and community activists from six countries: USA, France, UK, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Rwanda.
Global XChange is a UK program comparable to the United States’ Peace Corps program. The aim of the program is to develop inter-community and inter-cultural dialogue skills through a series of activities that involve work-shadowing attachments, skills sharing, training workshops and community events. Five incredible Los Angeles nonprofits have been selected to participate: Street Poets, Create Now, Reach LA, Homeboy Industries and LA’s Best.
Above is an example of the first program which took place in between Scotland and Malawi. Inspiring.
How can you help? Well, we’re currently looking for a sponsor to supply the group of kids who are participating with 2 Flip cameras to document their Xchange experience taking place in Durban and Belfast. Mad props and credit will be given where credit is due. So if you, or someone you know would like to participate, please contact me.
More info about Global Xchange.
This reminds me to put some items up for people to borrow. And I agree, Micki is all kinds of awesome. She’s been working on this project for a while. Glad to see it growing!
“When you add an item to the NeighborGoods inventory, you choose how to share it with the community. You can allow your friends to borrow the item for free and charge others a rental fee. Or you can decide to make the item only available to friends. Its your stuff, so you set the rules.”
on the new community site NeighborGoods (I think Micki Krimmel is awesome. Very interested to see what happens with this site.)
Yes. I would have to say this is my favorite song from the album as well. I can’t stop playing it.
